Rover 75: the English patient?

Comments

The Roewe 750 and the Rover 75V8 are nice looking cars. I remember I really liked it when it first came out, and it seemed to have the features to punch above it's weight at the Jag market, it's a shame it never took off.

From memory Autocar even compared the 75 with the larger Jaguar S-type. It is a pity that BMW essentially killed it at the British Motor Show by moaning about the high value of the pound (neither the time nor the place to do that), then the press crucified it. While I probably would have ordered the car to be softened out of fear it would conflict with BMW (hindsight suggests I wouldn’t), I would never have rubbished Rover and Britain on launch day.
That's insane on the scale of "New Coke" LOL
The main difference is that the company eventually collapsed, while New Coke actually helped Coca-Cola increase its sales. But yep, pretty insane.

Well they removed "new coke" from the market after their customers stopped buying the product and reintroduce the old Coke as Coca-Cola Classic. This was a corporate disaster.

I find the auto business perplexing as it takes an investment in the billions and this investment is continuous to keep up with the competition and technology. Does anyone care about the Chevy Citation X-11? Sad too about Rover.

The up side for Coca-Cola was they now have two Cokes—both with its loyal customers. But it was a big PR mistake at the time because it showed a total misunderstanding of the brand.
Chevrolet Citation X-11—I should put that on Autocade! That was the two-door from 1980 to 1983, right?

Yes on the Citation, GM's first front wheel drive car. I'm not a fan of front wheel drive that's why I bought the Miata. After driving the Miata I fell in love with the handling. The Audi 4000 was the first front wheel drive car I owned and while I loved it and my Saab 99's and my Mazda sedans, I still prefer rear wheel drive.

New Coke is not sold where I live and don't think that it's sold in the USA.

Most cars in my price bracket are front-wheel drive. I did not enjoy the change …

What's all this about quality problems? I have owned 2 75's and one for several years. Both have been totally reliable and faultless in every way. There were some problems with the 1.8 version blowing head gasketsapparently , but I've never heard of anything serious otherwise. Have you ever checked out the blogs about Mercedes cars? Serious problems abound, but people don't go round slagging them off.I think Rover got a really bad deal!
I don’t know where you are but the 75s I see are in terrible shape. A friend had to have her engine replaced recently, too. I am no fan of recent Mercedes reliability—but Roger, that post wasn’t about Mercs. And you are wrong: I go around slagging them off. Have done many times.
